OUR DIGITISING OF RARE VIDEO TAPE TRANSFER SERVICES ARE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

MEDIA STABILITY: How long will different media last before becoming unreadable? What priority should be given to migration or preservation of media? We recommend that old and rare video tape should be converted at the soonest convenience. Not only can the tape become unstable due to degrading brought on by a number of factors including de-magnetisation or chemical breakdown, but the more pressing concern is the machinery available that can convert the tapes. These are becoming more rare by the year.

FILE SIZES: Digital video produces vast amount of data. Using PAL-SD as an example, image only no audio and stored as YUV422 16bit with a resolution of 720x576 and applying no compression would result in a file size of 1.15gb per minute. For 10bit would represent 1.4gb per minute. Therefore we ask for a hard drive suitable for storage on all orders.

10BIT UNCOMPRESSED AVI/MOV: For long-term archiving purposes, the most important factor for choosing a codec is to be able to preserve the content adequately in a stable manner and its vendor-independent accessibility over time. AVI is currently recommended by The National Archives for meeting the requirements suitable for preservation archiving of video tapes.

FFV1 - LOSSLESS COMPRESSION: We offer several choices of archival conversions to suit your requirements. FFV1 is a lossless compression format meaning there are compression algorithms which reduce the filesize but still preserve every bit in its original state, even after recompressing an infinitive number of times. Think of a Zip file!

PRO-RES & H.264 MPEG4 - LOSSY ENCODING:Apple Pro-Res is perfectly suitable for video editing and ideal for MAC users. But for archival reasons due to being lossy it is not recommended for archival purposes. The same is applied to MPEG4 whereby this format is perfect for viewable copies of originals.
