Our preservation archive transfer services for capturing content from professional broadcast tapes and converting to new digital formats can conver the following specifications. 10 bit uncompressed files in either AVI or Quicktime codecs. Pro-Res 422, FFV1, H.264 MOV, H.264 MP4, DVD and Blu-Ray discs. These can be converted to storage media, cloud or your own server. There are a variety of broadcast tapes we can transfer to 10 bit uncompressed digital files with either AVI or Quicktime codecs. We offer many different formats but the most common are above and priced accordingly. 10bit uncompressed is considered to be National Archive quality and suitable as an original master mezzanine format from which further copies can be made in any format. FFV1 is considered suitable for archiving as a lossless compression format. Apple Pro-Res is a lossy format available in several quality levels and ideal for video editing due to its file sizes. MPEG4 is also lossy but highly efficient and ideal as a digital copy for viewing purposes.
At Oxford Duplication we can preserve, archive and digitise your professional and corporate video tape formats to include VHS, SVHS, SVHC-C, Betacam SP SX, U-Matic (3/4 video tape) and HDCam into any digital video format from 10 bit uncompressed to your chosen codec AVI/Quicktime to compressed formats H264 MPEG4, FFV1, Pro-Res files for online use, YouTube or other suitable platforms. Alternatively we can provide authored DVD and Blu-Rays with menu suppliments. Our services are suited for the long term archival of video that will support your archive preservation requirements.
FILE SIZES: Digital video produces vast amount of data. Using PAL-SD as an example, image only no audio and stored as YUV422 16bit with a resolution of 720x576 and applying no compression would result in a file size of 1.15gb per minute. For 10bit would represent 1.4gb per minute. Therefore we ask for a hard drive suitable for storage on all orders.
10BIT UNCOMPRESSED AVI/MOV: For long-term archiving purposes, the most important factor for choosing a codec is to be able to preserve the content adequately in a stable manner and its vendor-independent accessibility over time. AVI is currently recommended by The National Archives for meeting the requirements suitable for preservation archiving of video tapes.
FFV1 - LOSSLESS COMPRESSION: We offer several choices of archival conversions to suit your requirements. FFV1 is a lossless compression format meaning there are compression algorithms which reduce the filesize but still preserve every bit in its original state, even after recompressing an infinitive number of times. Think of a Zip file!
PRO-RES & H.264 MPEG4 - LOSSY ENCODING:Apple Pro-Res is perfectly suitable for video editing and ideal for MAC users. But for archival reasons due to being lossy it is not recommended for archival purposes. The same is applied to MPEG4 whereby this format is perfect for viewable copies of originals.
